Embryo Transfer

Embryo Transfer & Animal Breeding Services

We provide access to specialized animal breeding and reproductive services designed to support genetic improvement, herd development and improved livestock productivity. Through collaboration with experienced breeding and reproductive-technology partners, we connect livestock farmers, breeding organizations and institutions with breeding programs tailored to their production objectives.

Our focus is on providing breeding services rather than the standalone sale of embryos or reproductive materials. Depending on the breeding objective, programs can incorporate advanced reproductive technologies such as embryo transfer, Ovum Pick-Up (OPU), in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and sex-selected breeding approaches.

Breeds We Support

Breeding objectives differ considerably between dairy, beef and mixed-production farming systems. We therefore support breeding programs across several breed categories.

Dairy Breeds

For dairy operations, breeding programs can focus on improving milk production, reproductive performance, longevity and other economically important characteristics.

Holstein is one of the major dairy breeds highlighted in our partner's breeding portfolio and is recognized for its high milk-production potential.

Jersey provides another important option for dairy breeding because of its higher milk-fat percentage, relatively lower maintenance requirements, early maturity and good fertility characteristics.

Beef Breeds

For beef-production systems, breeding programs can focus on characteristics such as growth performance, body development, feed conversion and carcass performance. It includes established beef breeds such as Charolais, Limousin and Blonde d’Aquitaine. These breeds are particularly known for their growth and carcass characteristics, making them relevant for breeding programs aimed at improving commercial beef production.

Dual-Purpose Breeds

Dual-purpose breeding provides an option for farms seeking animals capable of contributing to both milk and meat production.

We have Simmental (Fleckvieh) and Montbéliarde among the relevant dual-purpose breeds. Such breeds can be particularly useful where the breeding objective is not solely maximum milk production but rather a balance of productive characteristics suitable for diversified livestock operations.

Indigenous Breed Improvement

We also support breeding approaches involving indigenous cattle, where the objective is to improve productive characteristics while considering the value of locally adapted genetics.Rather than simply replacing indigenous animals, a breeding program can be developed around the existing herd and the farmer's desired outcome. Breeding of indigenous breeds is part of breeding approach involving Holstein with indigenous cattle to produce Fleckvieh-type offspring, as well as Jersey with indigenous cattle.

Our Breeding Services

Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer enables selected genetics to be introduced and multiplied within a breeding herd. Suitable embryos are transferred into prepared recipient animals, which subsequently carry the pregnancy.

This approach can help accelerate genetic improvement compared with relying solely on conventional breeding.

OPU & IVF Breeding Programs

Advanced programs may incorporate Ovum Pick-Up (OPU) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Oocytes are collected from selected donor animals, matured and fertilized under controlled laboratory conditions, with suitable embryos subsequently transferred to recipient animals.

Sex-Selected Breeding

Where appropriate, breeding programs can incorporate technologies intended to increase the probability of producing offspring of a preferred sex. This can provide additional control when developing dairy, beef or replacement-herd breeding strategies.

Why Advanced Animal Breeding?

Advanced reproductive technologies allow livestock operators to make more strategic use of desirable genetics and potentially achieve genetic progress within their herds more quickly.

Depending on the breeding program and farm objectives, these services can support:

  • Faster introduction and multiplication of desirable genetics
  • Development of more productive breeding herds
  • Improvement of dairy, beef or dual-purpose characteristics
  • Strategic upgrading of existing or indigenous herds
  • More efficient use of genetically valuable donor animals
  • Greater control over long-term herd development

Who We Serve

Our animal breeding services are designed for large-scale farmers, commercial livestock farms, breeding organizations, cooperatives, government institutions, NGOs and livestock-development projects seeking structured solutions for herd improvement.

Frequently asked questions

1What animal breeding services do you provide?

We facilitate breeding programs that may include embryo transfer, OPU/IVF and sex-selected breeding technologies according to the client's herd and breeding objectives.

2Which cattle breeds can you support?

Our breeding programs can cover dairy, beef, dual-purpose and indigenous breed improvement, including breeds such as Holstein, Jersey, Charolais, Limousin, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Simmental/Fleckvieh and Montbéliarde.

3Can you help improve indigenous cattle?

Yes. Breeding programs can be developed around existing indigenous herds with the objective of introducing selected productive characteristics while considering the farm's environment and breeding goals.

4Do you sell embryos?

Our primary offering is animal breeding services, rather than the standalone commercial sale of embryos.

5How do I select the right breed?

The appropriate breed depends on your production objective, existing herd, farming environment and whether your priority is dairy production, beef production, dual-purpose production or genetic improvement of an existing herd.

6Can the sex of offspring be selected?

Depending on the breeding program and reproductive technology used, sex-selected breeding options may be incorporated into the program.

7Who can use these breeding services?

Our services can support commercial farmers, breeding farms, livestock organizations, cooperatives, government and non-governmental institutions and other livestock-development projects.

8How do I start a breeding program?

Share details of your existing herd, breed, number of animals and breeding objectives with IHIT Kenya. We will assess your requirements and help connect you with an appropriate technical breeding solution.
